History

The Virginia Society of Plastic Surgeons (VASPS) is dedicated to addressing legislative and regulatory issues that affect the practice of plastic surgery in Virginia. Since 2001 we have worked on issues including the scope of practice of oral surgeons, insurance payment for Alloderm and Flex HD used in breast reconstruction, advertising of cosmetic surgery and outpatient surgery regulations. The VASPS was re-organized in 2007, and incorporated in Illinois. In January of 2012 the VASPS was re-incorporated in Virginia. Current efforts include working with a coalition of medical specialty groups and the Medical Society of Virginia to improve outpatient safety regulations in Virginia.

The VASPS cooperates with the Medical Society of Virginia and the American Society of Plastic Surgery, but primarily works through our own lobbying firm to further the interests of our patients. In this way we are able to monitor, and work with the Virginia General Assembly as well as the Department of Health Professions. The society is funded by dues and donations from plastic surgeons in Virginia, but receives additional support and services from The American Society of Plastic Surgeons. We welcome advice and suggestions regarding additional issues of concern to the practice of plastic surgery in Virginia.
